HEUVELTON - The Heuvelton AmVets Ladies Auxiliary Post 1997 made an impact at the Army Ten-Miler in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 20 by donating shoes to support the troops.

Robin E. Chambers, whose son Mike serves in the 865th Combat Support Hospital in Niagara Falls and who ran in the ten-miler, said she first heard about the opportunity when she was researching the race.

After seeing that the AmVets were looking for shoe donations during the race at the National Reserves Armory, Mrs. Chambers said she quickly organized members of the local auxiliary to donate themselves.

“Because I was going down there anyway I thought we could try something like that here,” Mrs. Chambers said.

Within a month the auxiliary had collected 30 pairs of shoes that they packed into Mrs. Chambers’ car for the trip down.

“From a small club we thought 30 pairs were pretty good,” Mrs. Chambers said.

Mrs. Chambers said the shoes will eventually be sold in thrift shops in Washington with the money going to help soldiers and their families.

“Any money they make goes to the soldiers and their families,” Mrs. Chambers said. “What a great way to contribute to the military and their families.”

The race itself was “just an amazing event,” Mrs. Chambers said, adding that there was time to show her grandchildren around the nation’s Capital.

Mike Chambers ran the race in one hour and 34 minutes flat. It was his first Army Ten-Miler, Mrs. Chambers said.

Roughly 35,000 people ran the race.
