CANTON — A former SUNY Canton student was profiled in Time magazine’s Oct. 28 issue, highlighted as one of many young men who heeded the call to go West.

Casey Colando moved to Texas in 2008 to live on 5 acres of land he had bought for $1,500 four years before, when he was only 19.

He has since started an alternative-energy company, helping his fellow settlers live off the grid with solar panels and wind turbines.

The article painted Texas as a booming state with low-cost homes and plenty of jobs, a destination for many across the country.

Although it called Mr. Colando a “SUNY Canton graduate,” the Stone Hills native attended the school for only one semester, in 2006, according to college officials, leaving the school before graduating and without transferring. He did take a course in alternative and renewable energy while a student.
