POTSDAM — The Met: Live in HD will bring an innovative production of Dmitri Shostakovich’s “The Nose,” based on Nikolai Gogol’s famous satirical short story, to movie theaters around the world Saturday.

William Kentridge stormed the Metropolitan Opera with his inventive production of Shostakovich’s opera, which dazzled opera and art lovers alike in its inaugural run in 2010.

Paulo Szot reprises his acclaimed performance of a hapless bureaucrat, whose satirical misadventures in search of his missing nose are based on Gogol’s comic story. Pavel Smelkov will conduct the performance.

“With unflagging energy and unfettered imagination, it powerfully seconds both the irreverent zaniness of the Gogol story on which the opera is based and the teeming exuberance of Shostakovich’s music,” a New York Times reviewer wrote.

Shostakovich’s “The Nose” will screen live from the Metropolitan Opera stage at 12:55 p.m. Saturday at Potsdam’s Roxy Theater. There will be an encore screening at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3.

The opera will be performed in Russian, with English subtitles.

The approximate running time is 2 hours, 15 minutes, including intermission.

The 2013-14 season of the Met: Live in HD is sponsored in the north country by SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music and J.S. Cinemas.

All productions will be shown live on Saturdays. There also will be encore presentations offered on Sundays locally. Doors open a half-hour before show time, and there is immediate seating for advance ticket holders.

In the Met: Live in HD productions, robotic cameras strategically placed around and behind the stage capture the live performance from striking angles and heighten attention to both performance and production. Intermission features and English subtitles bring the stories to life.
