OGDENSBURG City school officials trying to sell a school that was shuttered in June have a tall hurdle to overcome: the property assessment.
The Sherman Elementary School property on Franklin Street is assessed at $837,563, a figure that city Assessor C. Bruce Green acknowledged may be scaring off potential buyers.
He said he plans to reassess the property in April. The new value will probably be in the $100,000 range, he said.
The Ogdensburg City School District was trying to sell the building for more than $200,000, but there is no minimum bid requirement, and despite talks with three interested parties, no solid offers have been made, Business Manager Jeffrey R. Swanson said. Its open season, he said.
Part of the reason for buyers hesitation was uncertainty over the propertys assessment and, in turn, the tax burden, Mr. Swanson said.
Mr. Green said the property, which has been tax exempt as a school, was last assessed more than a decade ago.
The district also will be looking to sell Lincoln Elementary School, on Knox Street, next summer after it closes that building.
