60 percent of homeowners in Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties and 61 percent of homeowners in Lewis County have registered for their basic STAR property tax exemptions as of Friday, according to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.
10,638 registrations have been received out of 17,865 Basic STAR recipients in Jefferson County, 3,488 out of 5,747 in Lewis County and 12,684 out of 21,057 in St. Lawrence County.
This is the first year in the 15-year-old program that the exemptions must be registered directly with the state.
According to officials, the change was made to keep people from improperly registering multiple properties for the same exemption. Property owners can register either online or by phone.
Senior citizens receiving enhanced STAR exemptions are not affected by the change since that program already requires annual registration.
More than 2.6 million homeowners are receiving the basic STAR exemption, saving an average of $700 each, according to the state. The registration deadline is Dec. 31.
