POTSDAM - Mary Ann Ashley, a Republican candidate running for mayor of Canton on the Democratic ticket, was one of two guests this week on North Country Matters, the local video news magazine produced by WCKN under the direction of Dan Dullea of the Center for Excellence in Communication at Clarkson University.

This show airs on WCKN, cable channel 30 (if you have a digital cable box) in the Potsdam Time Warner market, at 7:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

Ms. Ashley sits down with JoAnn Rogers, assistant professor of Sociology at Clarkson University and a member of the St. Lawrence County Branch of the American Association of University Women, and Liam Hunt, Professor Emeritus of History of St. Lawrence University, a member of the League of Women Voters of St. Lawrence County,

The non-partisan Conversations with Candidates invite each candidate to explain their positions, records, and ideas in a thoughtful and civil discussion of the issues, without 30-second sound bite answers or negative campaign rhetoric. In each case, invitations were extended to all the candidates in each race; only Ms. Ashley accepted the NCM invitation.

The second show, airing at 8 p.m. on both days, features a conversation with Potsdam Central School Superintendent Pat Brady, who gave a school check up. Talking with him were Ann Carvill, a former Potsdam School Board of Education member and education blogger, and Donna Seymour, a member of the St. Lawrence County Branch of the American Association of University Women.

The superintendent spoke about the status of the current buildings renovations package, a proposed package to renovate the old Potsdam Day Care Building on the school grounds for BOCES use, the Potsdam-Canton Merger Study, and what the district has been doing to implement and educate teachers and parents about the new Common Core curriculum guidelines.

The NCM civic partners working to educate North Country residents about critical public policy issues facing our region include AAUW-St. Lawrence County, the League of Women Voters of St. Lawrence County, and Clarkson Media and Mass Communication students, who provide the technical expertise for the productions. The shows are taped in the WCKN studio on the Clarkson campus.

Starting at 12 noon each Sunday you can watch all of this season’s NCM shows in succession. An interview with Marie Regan, town of Potsdam supervisor, begins at noon; BOCES Superintendent Tom Burns talking about school mergers is at 12:30 p.m.; Steve Todd from BOCES talks about funding education through grants at 1 p.m.; District 9 Legislator Steve Putman is on at 1:30 p.m. and Nicole Duvé follows on air at 2 p.m. Mary Ann Ashley’s conversation will start at 2:30 p.m. and the last show of the day will be Pat Brady at 3 p.m.

You can view Channel 30/WCKN using a TWC supplied digital set-top box, with a leased DTA (Digital Tuning Adapter) from TWC, or on a TV with a built-in digital cable tuner (QAM or Clear QAM), will continue to be able to view this programming without additional equipment.
