New Life Christian Church closed on the sale of its 1222 Arsenal St. building Sept. 9, buying it from Stateway Plaza for $1.5 million.
The church, which opened in November 2008, leased the building for the previous five years and completed numerous renovations, the Rev. Kirk S. Gilchrist said. The building previously the Interstate theater at Stateway Plaza was retrofitted to feature a sanctuary, four classrooms, a childrens wing and a recording studio.
We leased it mainly because it gave us the ability financially not to have a mortgage and to renovate the building, the Rev. Mr. Gilchrist said. My background is in commercial building, and the work was done with real excellence.
The church had a congregation with about 200 members when it opened in 2008, the Rev. Mr. Gilchrist said. Today, it hosts four services on Sunday and has a total of about 900 members.
The churchs next project is to launch a day care center, he said. The center is expected to open in the next two to three months, after it acquires certification from the state Department of Health.
We want to provide a service to military families, the Rev. Mr. Gilchrist said. It will be run from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. so that people who have early shifts can drop off the kids.
The center will provide services for infants to children 5 years old, he said.
