Attention New York State voters:
This November, you have a referendum issue to vote on to amend our state constitution. This amendment will allow at least seven Las Vegas-style casinos, most of which will be in Northern New York.
The gambling industry has already spent more than $50 million lobbying our politicians about how wonderful it will be for our state. It will bring economic development.
If that is true, how come our state has financial problems? After all, we have had the lottery (a form of gambling) for a good long time and we still have our financial problems! It will also fund education, they say, but they do not tell you that every $1 that comes from gambling for education is deducted by the state from their school state aid assistance.
They also do not tell you that more than half of gambling revenue comes from addicted gamblers. When the family bread-winner gambles away his paycheck, the family will have to go on welfare. Gambling is as addictive or more so than drugs or alcohol.
We put druggies in jail, and DWI will get your license suspended and you will pay a hefty fine. Think about it. Is this really what you want for our state? Think about it and vote no on this referendum measure.
