THERESA- Donald E. Wilcox, age 79, of Theresa, NY died on Sunday, October 13th at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, NY surrounded by his loving family. He had been ill from Lung Cancer for a brief period.
Born August 29, 1934 in Theresa, the son of Orin & Gladys Wilcox, he graduated from Theresa High School and went on to graduate from St. Lawrence University in 1957 with an ROTC scholarship. While at SLU he was a very active member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. Following college, he served in the Army Reserves for over 10 years.
He married Linda (Allen) Wilcox on March 15th, 1958 at Theresa Presbyterian Church in Theresa.
Mr. Wilcox opened up his own insurance agency, the Donald E. Wilcox Insurance Agency, in 1973 out of his fathers old NYS Assemblyman Office upstairs in his childhood home. Soon after he formed North Jefferson Agencies, Inc., purchasing several local agencies over a period of several years and at one time had offices in LaFargeville, Philadelphia, and Alexandria Bay in addition to the main office in Theresa. He retired in 1994, selling the agency to Haylor, Freyor & Coon.
He was a lifelong member of the Theresa Presbyterian Church and longtime Elder and was on the Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Theresa Volunteer Fire Dept. for numerous years. He was also a member of and served multiple times as President of the Theresa Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow, the highest honor bestowed on Rotarians, the first 2nd generation recipient at the time. He was also an avid duck hunter and fisherman and was a longtime and active member of Ducks Unlimited.
Aside from his loving wife, Linda, he is survived by two sons and their family, David, his wife, Sally Wilcox, Theresa, and their two daughters, Tori and Cassie, and Brian, his wife, Lori and their two daughters, Madison & Kennedy; and a daughter, Barbara Mollica, her children, Lisa and TJ, and her companion, Doug Bartlett, from Lexington, Virginia; and a brother and his wife, Russell and Mary Cookie Wilcox, Theresa.
Calling hours will be from 6:00pm to 9:00pm on Wednesday, October 16th at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home in Theresa, and a Memorial Service will be held at the Theresa Presbyterian Church on Thursday, October 17th at 10:00am.
The family would like to thank the Dr.s and nurses and all of the wonderful staff at Samaritan Hospital as well as the River Hospital for their care during the later stages of his illness.
