POTSDAM — Erica Howe made 26 saves as third-ranked Clarkson shut out Syracuse 4-0 in a nonconference game at Cheel Arena Saturday, tying the school record with a 5-0 start.

Clarkson took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period on a power-play goal from Carly Mercer.

Genevieve Bannon made it 2-0 with a second-period goal and Erin Ambrose and Vanessa Gagnon scored in the third period.

Syracuse fell to 1-3.

BOSTON COLLEGE 2, ST. LAWRENCE 1

Andie Anastos scored at 12 minutes, 47 seconds of the third period to help the second-ranked Eagles (3-0) defeat St. Lawrence University in a nonconference game in Canton.

Emily Field scored the first goal of the game for Boston College, and Dayle Wilkinson scored during a power play for the Saints (1-5).

MEN’S SOCCER

ST. LAWRENCE 1, RIT 0

Austin Roney scored in the 32nd minute to lift the Saints past RIT (5-5-2, 2-2) in a Liberty League contest in Canton.

Aaron Costello made five saves for the Saints (8-1-2, 4-0).

SUNY ONEONTA 4, SUNY POTSDAM 1

Scott Taglione scored twice as the Red Dragons (9-2-3, 5-0-1) defeated SUNY Potsdam in a SUNYAC game in Oneonta.

Jake Sutherland and Zef Saljanin also scored for SUNY Oneonta.

Conor Engle scored for the Bears (7-6-1, 1-3-1).

SUNY CANTON 3, ALFRED STATE 1

Nick Escalante played a part in all three goals as the Kangaroos (8-5) defeated Alfred State in a nonconference game in Canton.

Escalante scored one goal and assisted on two others for SUNY Canton. Tyler Gallagher and Jose Menendez also scored.

Nick Peraino scored for Alfred State (2-9).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

SUNY CANTON 4, CAZENOVIA 1

Alexis Sweet and Jade Sayward each scored two goals to lead the Kangaroos (7-7) past host Cazenovia College in a nonconference game.

SUNY Canton enjoyed a 17-5 edge in shots on the Wildcats (5-9).

SUNY ONEONTA 4, SUNY POTSDAM 0

Karly DeSimone tallied two goals to help SUNY Oneonta defeat the Bears (5-7-1, 2-3-0) in a SUNYAC contest in Potsdam.

Kayla Ceschini and Liz Lasota also scored for the Red Dragons (6-3-3, 3-0-3).

RIT 3, ST. LAWRENCE 2

Sierra Kiss scored twice as the Tigers (8-1-3, 3-0-1) edged SLU in a Liberty League game in Rochester.

Maxine Culhane also scored for RIT.

Julia Friesen and Samantha Rock scored for the Saints (6-4-2, 0-4-0).

SKIDMORE 3, CLARKSON 0

The Thoroughbreds enjoyed a 14-3 edge in shots in a Liberty League win over Clarkson (4-9, 0-4) in Potsdam.

Christine Bellotti, Arena Manning and Kelly O’Donnell scored for Skidmore (9-0-2, 4-0-0).

MOHAWK VALLEY CC 7, JEFFERSON CC 1

Silvana Giovannone accounted for two goals and three assists as the Hawks routed the host Cannoneers in Mid-State Athletic Conference play.

Ashley O’Connor, Andrea Stowell and former South Lewis product Brooke Pominville each tallied a goal and an assist for Mohawk Valley Community College (13-2, 4-0).

Whitney Maitland scored for Jefferson CC (3-8, 1-4).

VOLLEYBALL

CLARKSON SWEEPS

The Golden Knights (19-6) won both of their matches during the second day of the Mid-West Invitational in Holland, Mich.

Clarkson opened with a 26-28, 25-15, 25-18, 19-25, 15-8 win over No. 15 Chicago and then swept Heidelberg 25-18, 25-21, 25-22.

Xiao Lang led Clarkson with 16 kills against Chicago and Lani Durio added 53 assists.

Aishvina Arasu produced 10 kills against Heidelberg with Durio adding 35 more assists.

BEARS DROP PAIR

Jenna Blujus produced 20 kills but the Bears (12-12, 4-2) dropped a pair of SUNYAC matches in Potsdam.

SUNY Plattsburgh opened with a 21-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-18, 15-7 win over the Bears and SUNY Fredonia swept the Bears 25-20, 25-22, 25-22.

SUNY CANTON WINS TWICE

A 23-kill effort from Kelsy Cornish helped the Kangaroos (21-3) to a pair of nonconference wins in Canton.

SUNY Canton opened with a 25-14, 25-12, 25-14 win over Maine-Fort Kent and then defeated SUNY Morrisville 25-13, 25-16, 25-13.

Mackenzie Mynter produced 52 assists overall.

Cannoneers place second

Jefferson CC placed second at the Onondaga CC Tournament, losing to nationally-ranked Northampton in the finals on Saturday, 25-16, 25-15.

JCC advanced to the finals with a 25-21, 20-25, 15-12 win over Finger Lakes CC in the semifinals.

The Cannoneers (16-11) also beat Herkimer CCC 2-0, SUNY Delhi 2-0 and Finger Lakes 2-1 on Saturday.

Shelby Contryman led JCC with 29 service points and 104 assists in the two-day event.

All-tourney member Ashley Capone recorded 103 kills, 19 points and 17 blocks, while all-tourney pick Haley Riley finished with 41 points, 27 kills and 35 digs.

CROSS COUNTRY

BECCIA WINS FOR SAINTS

SLU senior Ariel Beccia was the individual winner in the women’s race, leading the Saints to a second-place finish at their own Ronald C. Hoffman Invitational.

Beccia finished the 6-kilometer course in 21 minutes, 45.72 seconds. SLU’s Amy Cymerman finished in third place.

The University of Toronto won the event with 34 points and SLU finished second with 53. Clarkson was sixth with 183 points, followed by SUNY Canton at 223 and SUNY Potsdam with 227.

SUNY Cortland dominated the men’s race with the first five finishers and a perfect score of 15 points. Toronto was second with 49 and the Saints were third with 72. Clarkson finished fourth with 145. SUNY Canton was ninth with 268 and SUNY Potsdam was 10th with 284.

SUNY Cortland’s Nick Marcantonio was the individual winner. SLU’s top finisher was Brendan Courneene, who placed ninth.

FIELD HOCKEY

VASSAR 3, ST. LAWRENCE 1

Tina Caso scored twice to help Vassar (8-4, 2-2) defeat the Saints in a Liberty League game in Poughkeepsie.

Bianca Zarrella also scored for Vassar. Kara Pelosi scored for the Saints (3-8, 1-3).
