POTSDAM—SUNY Potsdam softball coach Shannon Dillabough has announced that seniors Megan Johnson (Heuvelton, Heuvelton) and Khalshia White (St. Regis Falls) will serve as the Bears’ captains for the upcoming 2014 season.

“Megan and Khalshia embody everything we stress with our softball program,” Dillabough said. “They are both extremely hard working and very team oriented. In their time with the program they have done whatever was necessary to help our team reach its goals. I am excited to get started for 2014 and I am confident they will be a big part of bringing our team together and keeping everyone focused.”

Johnson, a pitcher, had a breakout season for Potsdam in 2013. She posted a 4-5 record with a save and three shutouts. On April 4, she threw the program’s second no-hitter in a 1-0 win over St. Lawrence University.

Johnson also hit .262 with 11 runs batted in.

“(Being selected as captain) was unexpected, but very exciting,” said Johnson. “Our main goal is to keep everyone motivated and on the right path to becoming the first Potsdam team to reach the SUNYAC Playoffs.”

White, who transferred to Potsdam last season, helped shore up the Bears defense in the outfield and the left side of the infield. She posted a.909 fielding percentage in 2013.

“To be a captain after just one season, it was awesome to know that Coach had that much faith in me,” White said. “We want to set an example for the team and be available to support them when they need it. We want to help the team be more cohesive and work hard and hope that helps us win more games and reach the playoffs.”

As it has for the previous two seasons, Potsdam will open its 2014 campaign on Feb. 28, with a doubleheader against Lyndon State in the Adirondack Sports Complex in Queensbury, N.Y.

The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
