CANTON - Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman encouraged Democrats to regroup in the north country.

Mr. Schneiderman, the keynote speaker at Friday’s annual St. Lawrence County Democratic Committee Dinner, said the current wrangling in Washington, D.C., over the debt ceiling and government shutdown is proving the Republican Party, which is attempting to defund the Affordable Care Act in exchange for funding the government, is inept.

The show in the nation’s capital can be harnessed and utilized to pave the way for a north country Democratic takeover, the attorney general said.

Comparing north country Democrats to the French Resistance who fought Germany during World War II, Mr. Schneiderman said he appreciates those who have struggled over the years to paint the St. Lawrence County

purple and he believes the current political climate will turn the county blue once and for all.

“We need an invasion of Normandy,” Mr. Schneiderman said, advocating for local Democrats to seize the moment and flood the ballot boxes on Nov. 5.

That “invasion” is already beginning, Mr. Schneiderman said, pointing to the politically induced gridlock in Washington that is impacting thousands of people across the nation. From civilians that were laid off at Fort Drum to veterans who are having more difficulty accessing their benefits, Mr. Schneiderman said now is the time for Democrats to stand up and show that they are the party of good government.

“Being a progressive doesn’t mean you are a left winger,” he said, “it means you believe in progress.”

And progress, Mr. Schneiderman said, means treating people equally.

“We’re here because as Democrats we do believe in equal justice under the law,” he said.
