GOUVERNEUR — John J. Crook, 31, of 291 W. Main St., was charged Sunday by state police with criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation and criminal mischief, both class A misdemeanors, and second-degree harassment, a violation.

Police said they received a call from a subject who said he wanted to hurt himself and wanted to talk to someone. Upon arriving at the scene of 148 W. Main St., police said, they found that Mr. Crook had broken a computer belong to his girlfriend, Madeline E. George, pushed her to the floor and choked her with one hand.

He was sent to St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, in lieu of $2,500 bail or $10,000 bond.
