MASSENA - A retired school superintendent has taken the helm of Nightengale Elementary School on an interim basis until a permanent principal is in place.

William Flynn, who retired as superintendent of the Ogdensburg City School District, replaces Shannon Jordan at a rate of $350 a day.

Ms. Jordan recently accepted a position with the St. Lawrence-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services. The Massena Central School Board of Education had accepted her resignation, effective Oct. 13, during their September meeting.

She previously served as a counselor in the district and was appointed as the elementary school principal in August 2009.

She took over for Michele Meyers, who resigned as principal effective June 30, 2009 to take a Committee on Special Education position in the Canton Central School District.

Ms. Jordan also served as an interim principal at Madison Elementary School from January 2009 until her appointment to Nightengale Elementary School.

“We wish her well. She’s got a great opportunity. It’s a nice opportunity for her and her family,” Interim Superintendent William W. Crist said.

The district has started advertising for a new full-time principal, with a closing date of Oct. 18 for applications. Mr. Flynn will serve as interim principal until the new person is hired. He had retired as superintendent of the Ogdensburg City School District on June 30, 2006.

“I was seeking out some individuals who could sit in on an interim basis. We identified William Flynn. He retired from Ogdensburg. He actually graduated from Massena schools some years ago, then worked in Ogdensburg as a principal, specifically an elementary principal. He spent part of his carer in Ogdensburg and retired as superintendent some years ago,” Mr. Crist said.

He said that Mr. Flynn agreed to take on the role after he was contacted about the interim position.

“When I contacted him ,he was elated. We welcomed him in last week. We had a faculty meeting last Wednesday and introduced him to the staff. He’s been here ever since. We’ve been very happy to have someone over there who has experience as an elementary school principal,” Mr. Crist said.

“It’s a finite period. It puts a stopgap in the situation,” he said.

Once applications have been received for the full-time position, Mr. Crist said they will assemble a committee to take part in the hiring process.

“I will do some screening of applicants to make sure everybody meets the requirements and has proper credentialing. Then we would bring the committee together. I’ve already sought some input from some of the staff and professional staff and support staff from Nightengale,” he said.

The committee will include some of the district’s principals and likely parent representatives, who will have input into the process, according to Mr. Crist.

“We wanted to assemble a representative group of qualified candidates so we can identify the best person for the job,” he said.

He said they plan to have a permanent principal in place between Thanksgiving and New Year’s

“There is some interest inside (the district). It’s an opportunity for advancement within the system,” Mr. Crist said.
