Potsdam to apply for state grant to clear underground canal

POTSDAM — The village plans to apply for a $440,000 state grant to clear obstructions from the underground canal that runs beneath Broad Street, carrying much of the village’s stormwater runoff to the Raquette River.

The canal was built more than a century ago and was vaulted over to allow the village to expand. Builders have since run water, sewer and gas lines through it, which obstruct debris and impede the flow of water.

In recent years, the village has struggled with flooding, and stormwater management has become a priority.

The $600,000 project would clear the canal of disruptions and allow for the purchase of hydrodynamic separators, which would be placed beneath manholes to separate water from canal-clogging sediment.

The grant application is due Dec. 13.
