SPOLIER ALERT: If you have not watched Monday’s episode yet, this piece will tell you whether or not Shawn Smith made a team.

BOONVILLE — A country song landed a Boonville native and former Army reservist based in Watertown the final slot on NBC’s televised singing competition “The Voice.”

Shawn “Big Sexy” Smith, Utica, a 1999 graduate of Adirondack Central School, was selected as the final member of Cee Lo Green’s 12-member team following a blind audition televised Monday night of “Chicken Fried” by the Zac Brown Band. In fact, since the other three judges’ teams already were filled, Mr. Smith was the final contestant to make the 48-artist field.

“Big Sexy, I’m really looking for you to bring it home for me,” Mr. Green said.

The 32-year-old contestant, who served for eight years as a combat engineer with the Watertown-based 479th Engineer Battalion, including a one-year tour in Iraq, performs with the cover band Showtime, as well as in a duo called Poor Tim.

“Music is my release,” said Mr. Smith, who recalled getting a severe concussion and losing 80 percent of the hearing in his right ear after a vehicle he was riding in ran over an improvised explosive device in Iraq.
