NYSERDA audits recommended as prerequisite for energy savings

Home and business owners in the north country may now take advantage of free energy audits offered by NYSERDA’s Green Jobs - Green NY program, made available by the Adirondack North Country Association to 10 counties in northern New York. The audits, completed by accredited engineers, provide an overview of energy improvements.

“If you don’t tighten up your building structure, you’re wasting energy regardless of whatever alternative energy you want to switch to,” said Jamie Rogers, energy program coordinator. “Before anyone looks at alternatives, they should first figure out how to tighten their buildings to reduce costs.”

Energy assessments take about three hours to complete, Mr. Rogers said. Applicants are required to gather 12 months of energy data for contractors, who complete building tests to measure energy efficiency. A written report from the audit includes suggestions for energy projects, and how much each will save. Typically, installation of dense-packed cellulose and spray foam are recommended in attic and basement areas. In some cases, rim joists need to be sealed.
