FL soccer: WHS boys tie IHC; Stackel earns 200th win

In the latest boys soccer showdown in the Frontier League’s “A” Division, both Immaculate Heart Central and Watertown each had to settle for a point.

Despite generating several quality scoring chances, the Cyclones and Cavaliers finished in a scoreless draw on Thursday night at IHC.

Marcus Lavarnway made 16 saves for Watertown (10-0-1) and Jarrod Smith finished with 13 stops for the IHC (9-2-1) in a game that included a pair of 10-minute sudden death overtime periods.

“We hit the crossbar just before overtime,” said IHC coach Mary Guyette, “and in the second overtime, they had a decent chance on a direct kick. I think both teams played very hard.”

Watertown remains in first place in the division, while IHC moved into sole possession of second place.

The Cavaliers next play at third-place Indian River at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and the Cyclones will host Lowville at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

GIRLS SOCCER

COPENHAGEN 5, SOUTH LEWIS 0

Claire Stackel totaled three goals and an assist as the unbeaten Golden Knights prevailed in Turin to clinch their sixth consecutive “D” Division championship.

Copenhagen head coach Katherine Stackel earned her 200th victory in 14 seasons of coaching girls soccer at the school. Stackel also coached boys soccer for six seasons at Carthage.

Emma Roberts tallied a goal and an assist and Brooke Spaulding contributed a goal for Copenhagen (11-0). Mackenzie Wheeler recorded the shutout.

Miranda Rys made 15 saves for the Falcons (3-6-1).

LYME 2, SACKETS HARBOR 0

Yanna Ososkalo generated a goal and an assist as the Indians blanked the Patriots in a “D” Division game at Chaumont.

Lauren Berry scored and Lauren Campbell turned aside four shots for Lyme (7-3-1), while Lauren Harrienger registered eight saves for Sackets Harbor (3-8-0).

THOUSAND ISLANDS 4, LAFARGEVILLE 0

Casey Webb scored on a penalty kick to spark the Vikings to a crossover victory at Thousand Islands.

Aliceson Cornaire made seven saves for Thousand Islands (9-2). Olivia Fulmer, Kerstin Phelps and Morgan Robbins tallied a goal each for the Vikings.

Destiny James was credited with 24 saves for the Red Knights (1-9).

SANDY CREEK 1, ALEXANDRIA 0

Marissa LeCelle’s second-minute goal was the difference as the Comets outlasted the Purple Ghosts in a crossover game at Sandy Creek.

McKenna Guarasce made eight saves for Sandy Creek (6-4-1), while Morgan Weaver stopped 15 shots for Alexandria (2-7-1).

BEAVER RIVER 2, BELLEVILLE HENDERSON 0

Emma Schneider and Kaylee Olmstead each scored in the second half to pace the host Beavers to a crossover triumph in Beaver Falls.

Mariah Abel earned the shutout for Beaver River (6-3-2), while Breanne Gilligan made 18 saves for the Panthers (2-9).

SOUTH JEFFERSON 2, IHC 0

Jackie Decker’s 10 saves helped the Spartans shut out the Cavaliers in a crossover game in Adams. She earned her eighth shutout of the season.

Molly Denny scored an unassisted goal and contributed an assist for South Jefferson (8-1-2).

Morgan Alexander tallied a goal in the first half for the Spartans.

Skylar Short finished with nine saves for IHC (3-6-2, 3-5-1).

CARTHAGE 3, LOWVILLE 0

Bryanna Gagnon and Mia Darroch each supplied a second-half goal to give the Comets a crossover win against the Red Raiders (7-2) in Carthage.

Cassie Birth also scored and Becky Brandal collected seven saves for Carthage (6-4-1, 6-3-1).

INDIAN RIVER 5, GENERAL BROWN 0

Erin Hesse’s two goal powered the Warriors to a crossover win against the Lions (0-11) in Dexter.

Caitlin Pacilio, Kammika Barnes and Brynne LaFave added goals for Indian River (5-7, 4-6).
