OBPA pursues “serious,” multi-year shipping prospect for port

Last week’s attendance at an international port/shipping conference may pay off handsomely for the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority.

OBPA Executive Director Wade A. Davis told the authority board Wednesday that a shipping prospect at the St. Lawrence port on Paterson Street will bring four years of business to port.

A final agreement, he said, is a few months away.

“We are in serious negotiations,” Mr. Davis said.

The prospect, the identity of which Mr. Davis declined to divulge, came about at last week’s annual three-day BreakBulk Americas Exposition in New Orleans. The OBPA boss, board Chairman Samuel J. LaMacchia and Director of Commercial and Industrial Development John A. Rishe attended the port trade show, which attracted more than 4,000 participants and 280 international exhibitors.

Mr. Davis also declined to identify the prospective cargo’s identity, its origin or destination. He did say that it was “oversized, over-threshold stuff” requiring the port’s Ford Street access road and on a par with the 90 windmill turbines through the port last summer and fall.

Other business prospects for the port, according to Mr. Rishe, include:

—A wood pellet company that would export its product from the port.

—Barge transport from the port of unidentified heavy equipment from 2014 to 2017. A decision on which of two freight companies will deliver it to the port has yet to be made.

“I would imagine by the early part of next year,” Mr. Rishe said.
