POTSDAM — It has spent 20 years playing their music around the world, and now the Jerusalem Quartet is coming to Potsdam.

The acclaimed musicians will open the SUNY Potsdam Community Performance Series’s fall season at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Hosmer Hall on campus.

Amy L. Flack, director of the Community Performance Series, first heard the quartet when it played at Lincoln Center in Manhattan.

“When I heard them play I was tremendously moved, and just thought so highly of how well they performed the material,” she said.

The Jerusalem Quartet was founded in 1993 by four Israeli students who studied together at the Jerusalem Conservatory of Music and Dance.

Alexander Pavlovsky, Sergei Bresler, Ori Kam and Kyril Zlotnikov tour the world, with shows in Europe, the United States and Canada.

Mr. Kam joined the group in 2011, replacing founding violist Amihai Grosz.

Ms. Flack booked the group for a Potsdam show a year ago. She said it provides a rare opportunity for community members to hear classical music performed by a renowned group from a country most will not have a chance to visit.

“Because they are an international ensemble there’s a limited number of opportunities for audiences to experience this particular group,” Ms. Flack said.

She was particularly impressed by the group’s mastery of the music of Dmitri Shostakovich, an influential 20th-century Russian composer.

The Potsdam program also will include selections from Mozart and Austrian composer Antonin Leopold Dvorak.

Tickets range from $22 to $30, with discounts for students, seniors and SUNY Potsdam faculty and staff. They can be purchased at the CPS box office at SUNY Potsdam’s Snell Music Theater, at Northern Music and Video at 29 Market St., by phone at 267-2277 or online at www.cpspotsdam.org.
