CANTON — The Canton Central School District has the most experienced faculty within the 429 school districts in upstate New York, according to a Buffalo-based business magazine.

The 2013 ranking is based on the number of years all full-time teachers have taught in front of a classroom.

“Canton is number one because it’s the only district in Upstate New York where more than 89 percent of the teachers have been in front of a classroom for 11 years or more,” G. Scott Thomas, Business First’s projects editor, said in an email.

The magazine ranked districts using data from the state Education Department. Teacher experience was analyzed in the 48 upstate counties north of the 42nd parallel.

Last year, Canton was ranked third.

District Superintendent William A. Gregory said the result is a mixed bag.

“It’s good because it shows we have a very experienced staff,” he said. “Unfortunately, we’ve lost some very good young teachers over the last few years because of budget cuts.”

Six other north country school districts also received a five-star ranking, which means they scored in the top 10 percent of upstate districts for teacher experience: Beaver River, 16; Potsdam, 20; Sackets Harbor, 23; Ogdensburg, 26; Thousand Islands, 31, and Madrid-Waddington, 38.
