FORT DRUM The 10th Mountain Divisions deputy commander of support was promoted from colonel to brigadier general during an on-post ceremony at the Commons on Tuesday afternoon.
Gen. Carl A. Alex was nominated for the new rank in July. He arrived on post in June, taking over the deputy role from Gen. Walter E. Piatt.
Prior to serving as the deputy commander, Gen. Alex was the deputy chief of legislative liaison in the office of Chief Legislative Liaison at the Pentagon.
Since joining the Army in 1983, Gen. Alex has held several leadership positions at the brigade and battalion levels.
Pinning the new rank to his uniform was Maj. Gen. Stephen J. Townsend, commander of the post and division, and division Command Sgt. Maj. Rick Merritt.
The advancement completes the promotions for the divisions deputy commanding generals. Brig. Gen. Mark J. ONeil, the divisions deputy commanding general for operations, received his new rank in July.
