SYRACUSE — One of Syracuse’s freshman basketball recruits will redshirt this season.

Chinonso Obokoh, a 6-10 center from Bishop Kearney High School in Rochester, will sit out this season and have four years of eligibility remaining, according to SU coach Jim Boeheim.

Obokoh is one of four Orange big men, making him unlikely to play meaningful minutes. Baye Moussa Keita is the lone senior, followed by junior Rakeem Christmas and sophomore Dajuan Coleman.

A native of Nigeria, Obokoh missed much of last season with a leg injury. He will be allowed to practice with the Orange this season.

Syracuse began practice for the 2013-14 season last Friday. Under new NCAA guidelines, teams may schedule 30 practices over a 42-day span before their first game. The Orange open the season at home against Cornell on Nov. 8.
