CARTHAGE Following an evidentiary hearing Sept. 16, the village decided to take matters into its own hands concerning a property at 511 Adelaide St.
Code Enforcement Officer Robert B. Ball said he had observed the property was in disrepair during a routine inspection of the village.
There are lots of openings anyone or any vermin can get in, he said.
Efforts to contact the owner, Ricky W. Meyers of Phoenix, were fruitless, according to Mr. Ball, and Mr. Meyers was a no show at the hearing. If Mr. Meyers does not do what is necessary to make the building secure within 30 days, the village will board it up and submit the bill to the property owner.
If the bill is not paid, the cost will be levied on Mr. Meyerss village taxes.
According to village historian Laura M. Prievo, the structure housed the Wag Foods distribution center before the 1940s.
