ALEXANDRIA BAY — Owners of Ledges Motel & Marina have decided to shut down the motel but maintain the marina portion of the family-owned business. The 71 Anthony St. motel will be torn down this fall after 50 years of operation.

“We just made the decision last week that it was time for us to move on,” said co-owner Nicholas R. Schaefer. “We appreciate the support from the community and our staff and customers who were like family to us.”

An auction to sell off the contents of the motel and equipment has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Oct. 22.

Mr. Schaefer said his family has owned and operated the business since his grandparents — Nicholas J. Schaefer, who passed away in 2004 at the age of 89, and Deborah C. — opened the Ledges Motel in 1963.

The family tried to sell the motel, but there were no bidders for the business, which has an assessed value of $1,026,000.

The marina and docks, which can accommodate up to 30 boats as well as a few housing units on the property, will remain in business.
