OGDENSGURG - Walk and run next month to remember Lee C. Hurteau of Ogdensburg.

And the other brave men and women who served their country in the military during the Vietnam War, dying during the conflict and, later, because of it.

A 5-kilometer untimed benefit Zombie Fun Run, in which walkers and runners try and dodge the zombies who are trying to take the “health” flags while raising money for the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Fund Educational Center Building, will be held Oct. 26.

The educational center in Washington, D.C., will honor those soldiers who died after the war of combat-related injuries including but not limited to Agent Orange exposure, suicide and post-traumatic stress.

“People need to know what their grandfathers went through,” said Mr. Hurteau’s widow, Linda A.M. Hurteau.

U.S. Army Cpl. Lee C. Hurteau served in Vietnam from 1965 to 1967. He died at age 65 last November of pancreatic cancer. But his widow said that her husband’s death was preceded by more than 40 years of come and go ailments - blisters, rashes, heart problems, diabetes and other ills - that followed his exposure to the defoliant Agent Orange in the jungles of Vietnam in 1967.

“He just started having these illnesses,” Mrs. Hurteau recalled Friday. “The doctors didn’t know how to treat him.”

It wasn’t until 2005 that Agent Orange exposure was ascertained as the root of Mr. Hurteau’s catalogue of ailments.

Wife and husband reacted differently.

“I was angry, he wasn’t,” Mrs. Hurteau said. “He said he got to come back home.”

The Zombie Fun Run registration is at 9 a.m. Start time is 10 a.m. at Amvets Post No. 19, 308 Isabella St.

Anyone 14 years and older who raises at least $35 from sponsors can participate as a runner/walker or Zombie. There will be a limited number of Zombies. Zombies are to dress up and come with their makeup on.

Runners/walkers who raise $100 or more will receive an extra “health” flag and will receive an extra flag if they wear a costume.

The runner/walker who raises the most money and the Zombie who collects the most flags will receive a prize.
