CANTON — Rylee Smith scored two goals to lead the St. Lawrence University women’s hockey team to a 4-2 win over the University of New Hampshire in a nonconference game Friday night at Appleton Arena.

It was only the fourth time the Wildcats had lost their season opener in 36 years.

Kailee Heidersbach and Mel Desrochers also scored for SLU, which tallied two power-play goals and built a 4-1 lead in the second period.

Nicole Gifford and Jenna Lascelle scored for the Wildcats.

MEN’S SOCCER

SUNY CANTON 8, ST. JOSEPH 0

Nick Escalante scored three goals and assisted on another as SUNY Canton defeated the Fighting Saints (1-7) in a nonconference game in Rutland, Vt.

Abdulai Jagana scored twice for the Kangaroos (4-5).

Keelon Joseph, Prince Adjei and Richie Bempong also scored for SUNY Canton.

VOLLEYBALL

CLARKSON WINS TWICE

Two sweeps at home gave the Golden Knights (11-4) a 3-0 start in Liberty League play.

Clarkson defeated Bard 25-4, 25-14, 25-12 and then swept Vassar 25-11, 25-21, 25-10.

Lani Durio provided 31 assist, 10 digs and 11 aces in the win over Bard.

Xiao Liang and Aishvina Arasu each tallied 11 kills against Vassar.

St. LAWRENCE 3, RIT 0

Lexi Brown tallied nine kills to lead the Saints (9-5, 1-1) to a 25-7, 25-10, 25-16 sweep of the Rochester Institute of Technology in a Liberty League match at Clarkson.

Jenna Street provided 11 assists for the Saints and Anna Kassab added 10.

SUNY POTSDAM 3, SUNY ONEONTA 0

Jenna Blujus produced 13 assists and nine kills as the Bears (7-9, 1-0) defeated SUNY Oneonta 26-24, 25-15, 25-21 in a SUNYAC match in Cortland.

Lauren Manzo added 10 assists for SUNY Potsdam.

SUNY CANTON TAKES TWO

Mackenzie Mynter produced 26 assists in the opening match helping SUNY Canton (13-1) to a pair of wins in the first day of the SUNYIT Invitational in Marcy.

SUNY Canton swept Alfred State 25-18, 25-19, 25-9 and then defeated Utica 25-12, 25-18, 20-25, 25-8.

MEN’S GOLF

BEARS WIN IN TIEBREAKER

John Hickey finished in second place overall, losing on the second hole of a playoff, but helped his team win the SUNY Canton Invitational at the Partridge Run Golf Club.

Hickey tied with SUNY Canton’s Mike Reilly at 78 strokes, but Riley claimed the individual title in the playoff.

SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Canton also tied in the team event with 321 strokes, but the Bears took the title because their No. 5 golfer, Ryan Merriman (83), had a lower score than SUNY Canton’s No. 5 golfer, Chris Schmidbauer (87).

SUNY Canton’s Nate Christy was third, one stroke behind the leaders. SLU’s men finished in third place with 344 strokes.
