New route for Ogdensburg’s Santa parade.

There will be a new route to downtown Ogdensburg for this year’s annual Light Up the Night Santa Parade.

Parade co-chairperson Rhonda L. Roethel said Thursday that the Nov. 23 parade route will start on State Street in front of Ogdensburg Free Academy at 6 p.m. and proceed nine blocks north to Ford Street and one block to the east to City Hall where Santa will greet children.

The previous route, west on Ford Street for 15 blocks to City Hall was dropped after two restaurants, Phoenix On The Bay, 1702 Ford St., and The Place, 1602 Ford St., said that their business was slow because of the passing parade last year.

“We’re happy with it,” Ms. Roethel said. “We’ll make it work.”

Ms. Roethel and parade co-chairperson Kathleen A. Bouchard agreed that State Street makes for a better parade than Ford Street because it has more lighting and points of access. It is also not a narrow thoroughfare which allows for on-street parking for parade watchers in their vehicles due to

Inclement weather.

“It’s a wider street which is going to be a big plus for us,” Ms. Roethel said.

It was earlier suggested that the parade avoid the two restaurants by leaving the lot at the 1800 block of Ford Street, go one block south to Greene Street, go another block west to Rosseel Street and north to Ford Street, heading west downtown to City Hall.

Parade entry forms can be picked up at Roethel’s, 1801 Ford St., Medicine Place, 511 State St., and the clerk’s office at City Hall, 330 Ford St.
