St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies on Thursday charged Todd A. Flanagan, 42, of 140 Jenkins Road, Richville, with aggravated driving while intoxicated after he crashed his vehicle into a tree.

Deputies said the crash occurred on Route 812 in the town of DeKalb, just north of Old DeKalb Road, when Mr. Flanagan’s car left the right side of the road.

Mr. Flanagan, who was not injured, told deputies that he swerved to avoid hitting a deer.

His blood alcohol content was listed as 0.21 percent. A BAC of 0.08 percent or more is considered proof of intoxication under state law. Aggravated DWI is charged when the BAC is 0.18 percent or more.

Also charged with DWI and related offenses:

Edward M. West, 24, of 1304 Pine St., Saranac Lake, was charged by state police Friday night.

Police said Mr. West was observed crossing the center line several times on Route 11 in DeKalb. His blood alcohol content was 0.08 percent.
