BURGLARY - MASSENA - A Massena man was jailed on a burglary count Monday morning after he allegedly broke a window pane on a door to gain access to his former residence at 54 Perkins Road.

Village police charged David S. MacDonald, 30, of 22 Perkins Road, Massena, with a felony count of second-degree burglary and two misdemeanor criminal mischief charges - one for damaging the window and the other for preventing the apartment’s resident from using her cell phone to contact police after he broke into her apartment.

He was arraigned by Massena Village Justice Eric J. Gustafson and sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with bail set at $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond. The court also signed a temporary order of protection directing MacDonald to stay away from Raelyn Barnes.

Police said they responded to the burglary complaint at 6:20 a.m. Monday. Ms. Barnes told police she was sleeping in her residence when she heard banging on her back door. She said she did not answer the door and a short time later MacDonald smashed the window in her door and gained entry to the apartment.

She said MacDonald then went upstairs in the apartment and started yelling at her. She said when she grabbed her phone to call the police to report the incident MacDonald grabbed the phone and threw it out the window.

“Dave is not living at 54 Perkins any more,” Ms. Barnes told police, saying he had moved out when she returned home from an in-patient treatment program. “He has been living at 22 Perkins for about a month now.”
