COLTON - The end of summer doesnt mean the end of outdoor activities in the north country. And the town of Colton is looking for ways to use its assets to encourage healthier lifestyles by improving places for residents as well as visitors to be physically active all seasons of the year.
Darren Richards, the towns superintendent of Public Works, explains the towns assets include the Pavilion at the Swift Field complex in the hamlet of South Colton. The Pavilion could be better utilized year-round for a variety of recreational and other activities. It is part of a larger complex, which also includes a nearby heated bathroom and changing area, making it for instance an ideal location for ice skating. And the recently expanded parking area at Swift Field accommodates more cars as well as vans and buses, he said.
So in 2013 the town has been planning a number of Pavilion improvements including acquisition of a portable ice skating rink to be installed before winter for hockey and other ice skating activities. Earlier this year the town received a Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work & Play grant from the St. Lawrence Health Initiative for a Porta-Rinx system as well as ice skates, which will be made available at no charge to anyone without equipment.
Now, with the blessing of the town board, the towns Department of Public Works is partnering with the towns Tourism & Beautification Committee to raise additional revenue from private sources through the sale of sponsor ads to be displayed for three years in the Pavilion.
Ruth McWilliams, Tourism & Beautification coordinator, said she and Scott Muller are coordinating the ad campaign. They are approaching businesses, organizations and even families about sponsoring ads.
For $350 sponsors can have a full-size ad measuring 3 by 5 feet adhered to one of the interior boards. A half-size ad measuring 3 by 2 ½ feet costs $275. Business and organization ads typically include a logo or image plus a tag line along with contact information. Families may want to include an image and text honoring people, places, things or events important to them.
Northeastern Sign in South Colton is producing the polycarbonate laminated ads from camera-ready copy. The modest cost of the three-year ads does not include design assistance. So if design assistance is needed, then sponsors need to either work with graphic artists at Northeastern Sign or elsewhere for an additional charge.
