CANTON — A two-vehicle crash Thursday night at county routes 27 and 29 in the town of Canton sent three people to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Potsdam, in serious condition.

The Canton Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad responded to the scene about 9:03 p.m.

The names and ages of the three people involved in the crash were not immediately available.

A passing motorist who stopped at the scene, Rodney G. Roberts, 37, Rensselaer Falls, said the two men in one car identified themselves as Heuvelton residents; one appeared to be about 40, and the other in his 20s.

The other vehicle was driven by a Canton woman.

Mr. Roberts said he was traveling south on Route 27 when he saw the headlights of a car swivel into the opposite lane on Route 29 before the crash.

Canton Fire Department First Assistant Chief Erik D. Johnson said it appeared that the car carrying the two Heuvelton men was hit broadside by the other vehicle.

Mr. Roberts said he pulled over before emergency responders arrived.

“I know CPR due to my having a scuba license, and I got into the car with the two guys to perform CPR,” Mr. Roberts said.

“The passenger had serious lacerations to his face and head, and the driver had his legs trapped and broken. He also had lacerations all on his head and face. There was a lot of blood,” Mr. Roberts said.

A hydraulic rescue tool was used because the driver of that vehicle was trapped.

As heavy rain began to fall, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and state police surrounded the occupants of the cars, who were lying in the road, and worked to get them onto stretchers.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Mr. Roberts said he believes that a slick road surface where Route 29 intersects with Route 27 was a factor.

“I drive these roads a lot, so I see a lot of these kinds of accidents,” Mr. Roberts said.

“It’s a wonder there was no fire due to the nature of this crash.”

Also assisting at the scene were the Pierrepont Volunteer Fire Department, Rensselaer Falls Rescue Squad and Potsdam Rescue Squad.
