CANTON — County Clerk Mary Lou Rupp warns St. Lawrence County residents that a legal “deed scam” is once again circulating throughout the county. Several concerned residents have contacted the county clerk’s office regarding a solicitation letter that they received in the mail. The letter comes in the form of an invoice labeled “Deed Processing Notice” and advises property owners to purchase a copy of their deed for $83. Residents do not need to purchase a certified copy of their deed unless their original deed can’t be found.

The certified copy can only originate from the county clerk’s office and since the fee is only $5, anyone who responds to the solicitation will unnecessarily pay an extra $78. Please disregard the letter if you receive it and contact the county clerk’s office at 48 Court St., Canton, NY 13617, or call 379-2237 if you would like a copy of your deed.
