Waddington hopes to improve waterfront with gazebo

WADDINGTON — The village may soon be home to a new gazebo.

The village Board of Trustees is considering constructing a 40-by-40-foot gazebo to replace its outdated pavilion in Island View Park.

The 22-by-40-foot barn-red pavilion was built by members of the Waddington Fire Department in 1976.

“It has served its purpose and we’ve made good use of it,” Mayor Janet M. Otto-Cassada said. “We’d like to move the gazebo down farther on St. Lawrence Avenue and toward the river.”

The gazebo would mirror its sister structure on Main Street, which has become a symbol of the village, emblazoned on T-shirts and town memorabilia.

Moving the pavilion would not interfere with the concert series, but actually would improve the performances, Ms. Otto-Cassada said.

Waddington Concert Series coordinator Louise C. Smith has said she would like to “see something bigger, especially since the events have become more popular and more well-known acts are drawing larger and larger crowds.”

Concerts have attracted audiences numbering more than 200 people, she said.

A new gazebo would sport an elevated stage and electrical hookups.

Island View Park, Ms. Otto-Cassada said, is a prime location.

“We’re hoping we can use the gazebo for weddings and receptions, too,” she said.

The cost of the proposed gazebo has yet to be estimated.

“We’re still working on that,” Ms. Otto-Cassada said. “That won’t be determined until next spring.”
