MASSENA - The Massena Permanent Firefighters will be holding their third annual 9/11 Walk/Run to Remember on Sunday, and if the first two years of the event are any indication of what to expect, the race should be filled with eager donors in a large age range come this weekend.

The event was spearheaded by Massena Permanent Firefighters Union President Aaron Hardy two years ago when the race was held on Sept. 11, 2011, the 10th anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks. Originally, the remembrance was just simply that, and has gradually turned into more of a fundraising event.

“The race was originally developed to remember the events of 9/11, not as a fundraiser,” Massena Permanent Firefighter Jeremy Lefeve said. “We’ve had such a great response from the community, we now raise funds for our Safe Home Fund and Fire Prevention Program, which purchases smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and fire extinguishers for residents in need, as well as fire prevention materials for children.”

Each of the past two year’s races has attracted near 150 participants. Additionally, the firefighters have garnered around $5,000 or $6,000 total in donations according to Mr. Lefeve.

The race begins at the Massena Fire Station at 34 Andrews St. at 9 a.m. From there the route takes the runners and walkers up Andrews Street to Route 37 and then to Nightengale Avenue, before making the turn for the back half.

Like this year’s race, 2012’s version was held the weekend before Sept. 11. The Massena Permanent Firefighters will soon find out when the 2014 race will be held.

“It’s Pepsi (Cola) Ogdensburg Bottlers that sponsor the event and they do the start/finish line for us. When they come in Sunday morning, they let us know what date is available for us next year and we announce that at the race,” Mr. Lefeve said.

The 5k run/walk has drawn attention from all over St. Lawrence County and even brought in some international participants.

“We have residents from all over the north country and we also get many from Canada as well,” Mr. Lefeve said. “There are participants anywhere from 10 years old to 75. We have a very wide age group that participates in the event.”

The event has a total of 43 sponsors, spanning from restaurants to local banks, and grocery stores and pharmacies.

Registration for the event costs $20 and closes at 8:45 a.m. on Sunday.
