There are no buyers again for the recently closed Sherman Elementary School in Ogdensburg, but efforts will continue to sell it.

Bids for at least $180,000 — down from an initial $250,000 — for the 16,380-square-foot building at 615 Franklin St., failed to materialize, so the Ogdensburg City School District is seeking purchase and development proposals without a minimum bid requirement by a Sept. 27 deadline, said Jeffrey R. Swanson, business manager.

Mr. Swanson said Friday that he had already received two inquiries, which he hopes will prompt more.

“What we’re basically going to is see how much people will pay for the building and how they’re going to develop it,” he said. “So there is an interest.”

School officials are confident that the former school has reuse potential as residential apartments or office space.

The school opened in 1895. It was rebuilt following a fire in 1949.

The school closed June 30 as part of the district’s plan to consolidate elementary education and trim costs.

Lincoln Elementary School on Knox Street is scheduled to close at the end of the coming school year.

To accommodate the 700 students from both schools, an expansion project is underway at John F. Kennedy Elementary School on Park Street.

Prospective buyers can contact James McCarthy to schedule an appointment for an inspection of the property. He can be reached at 393-0900, extension 250.

For more information, call Mr. Swanson at 393-7912, extension 40293.
