The Watertown Daily Times won seven awards in the New York State Associated Press Association’s 2012-13 contest that recognizes excellent writing, presentation, photography and graphics in AP member newspapers.

The Times won five photography awards. Staff photographers Justin Sorensen and Jason Hunter each won two, and Amanda Morrison won one. Mr. Sorensen came in at third place in the spot news category for his shot of a June 2012 house fire in Lorraine and at first place in features for his photo of a couple on the Skyflyer ride at the Jefferson County Fair in July 2012.

Mr. Hunter won second place in features for his photo of father Michael S. Reynolds holding his 6-month-old daughter Anna that ran May 7, and first place in portraits and personalities for his portrait of Massena hockey player Zach Robert that ran March 24 in the Times.

Ms. Morrison won first place in the photo essay category for her series of photos of a top-medic competition at Fort Drum that ran in the paper in August 2012.

Writing awards went to sports staff writer Leslie Sheldon and Johnson Newspapers reporter Benny Fairchild.

Ms. Sheldon’s first-place award was for her story “Marilley survives scare in pool, plans to swim again,” a compelling story about a young Watertown High School swimmer who survived being found unconscious at the bottom of a pool and went on to compete in swimming events.

Mr. Fairchild won second place in the continuing coverage category for his series of stories about a Waddington priest and members of his flock being defrauded by a scam artist.

“I am very proud of our award-winning reporters and photojournalists. These awards indicate how serious we are about delivering high-quality journalism to Northern New York and reaffirms our commitment to news and news media,” Northern New York Newspapers CEO John B. Johnson said. “I am honored to work with these award winners and I hope the community realizes how fortunate we all are to have them as our neighbors and colleagues.”
