Local colleges: Clarkson men’s soccer rallies to nip SUNY Cortland

POTSDAM — The Clarkson University men’s soccer team came back from a rough first half and claimed a 4-3 victory over SUNY Cortland in a Lotto Classic game on Friday afternoon.

SUNY Cortland led 2-1 at halftime of the season opener for both teams, scoring one goal on a Clarkson own goal.

Clarkson tied the game when Marco Parisi scored his second goal of the contest in the 47th minute. Tucker Wilcox scored off a pass from Parisi in the 59th minute, and Alex Vozzella added another goal in the 63rd minute.

Matt Williams scored the other goal for the Red Dragons.

STEVENS INSTITUTE 4,

ST. LAWRENCE 1

Colin Phillips scored twice in the first four minutes of the game to lead No. 13 Stevens past the No. 20 Saints in a Lotto Classic game in Canton.

Phillips scored his first goal in the third minute and scored again in the fourth to give the Ducks the lead for good. Jay Mikula scored the other two goals for the Ducks.

Mark Provost scored for SLU in the 56th minute.

SUNY POTSDAM 3, LYNDON STATE 1

Kyle Cronin scored one goal and assisted on another to lift the Bears past Lyndon State in the opener of the Collegiate Village Cup in Potsdam.

Alessio Vitale and Brian Emery also scored for SUNY Potsdam, which took a 3-0 halftime lead. Colin Brady scored for Lyndon State in the 84th minute.

NAZARETH 5, SUNY CANTON 3

Yacov Zohn and Ramez Al-Hebshi scored goals in the final 27 minutes to lead the Golden Flyers past SUNY Canton in the opener of the Doug May Classic in Pittsford.

The game was tied 3-3 after Abdulai Jagana scored for the Kangaroos in the 59th minute. Zohn’s game-winner came in the 64th minute and Al-Hebshi scored in the 71st.

Nick Escalante and Tyler Gallagher also scored for SUNY Canton.

Michael Batiste scored twice for Nazareth and Simon Moundson also scored.

CLARKSON SPLITS

The Golden Knights opened the season with a 25-12, 20-25, 25-19, 25-23 victory over Richard Stockton at the SUNY Cortland Invitational.

Clarkson (1-1), which is ranked No. 23 nationally, fell to No. 11 Mount Union 22-25, 25-21, 25-22, 18-25, 17-25 in its second match.

BEARS TAKE TWO

SUNY Potsdam opened the season with a pair of wins at the SUNY Oneonta Invitational.

The Bears defeated Hartwick 25-18, 25-21, 25-17 and then defeated Emmanuel 25-13, 23-25, 25-18, 22-25, 15-13.

SAINTS FALL TWICE

SLU, also competing in Oneonta, dropped its first two matches of the season.

The host Red Dragons defeated SLU 25-22, 25-22, 25-23 and Kean earned a 23-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-21 victory over the Saints.

KANGAROOS START 2-0

SUNY Canton opened its own invitational with a pair of victories.

The Kangaroos defeated SUNYIT 25-23, 25-15, 25-19 and then defeated SUNY Oswego 25-18, 24-26, 25-15, 25-20.
