Ogdensburg police cracking down on noise in the Greenbelt this summer but are appealing to the public for understanding.

“We’re down there a lot more than people realize,” Chief Richard J. Polniak Jr. said Monday.

At the Aug. 12 City Council meeting, Riverview Towers resident Judy A. Cyrus criticized the police for not doing enough to quell late night noise and speeding motorists in the nearby Greenbelt.

Mrs. Cyrus said speeding vehicles and noise have been frightening many of the towers’ elderly residents, and requested greater police presence to ensure safety.

But the chief insisted then and he contends now there has been as much of a police presence as manpower will allow.

“We just can’t be 24/7,” Mr. Polniak said.

The chief said that several vehicle and traffic summonses have been issued to motorists in the Greenbelt since Aug. 12.

One that got away on Aug. 14 was a pickup truck whose allegedly speeding driver cut across the Kids Kingdom playground after the 10 p.m. closing time to avoid being ticketed by bicycle patrolmen Keith D. Morgan and Joshua T. Vine.

“That is under investigation,” Mr. Polniak said.
