EDWARDS - Coming to The Edwards Opera House at 7 p.m. Sept.14, TAUNY presents Songs To Keep, bringing some of the north cCountrys finest artists to Edwards to bring old-time folk music to the Opera House stage.
The concert features Dave Ruch, Don Woodcock, The Fraser Family and Friends, John Kirk and Trish Miller and Lee Knight.
Songs to Keep concerts bring to life music from the long-forgotten Marjorie Lansing Porter Collection, gathered by a lively historian who traveled across Northern New York recording songs on her trusty SoundScriber. The concerts are part of an exciting and far-reaching project that includes a CD of songs from the collection recorded by contemporary artists, a song book with music, lyrics, and historical information, and a documentary featuring Pete Seeger, Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul & Mary, and the Bacon Brothers, which will be aired on PBS.
The Edwards Opera House Songs to Keep concert features musicians from different corners of the region, according to concert host and performer Dave Ruch. John Kirk & Trish Miller are coming from the southeastern Adirondacks, bringing with them a variety of stringed instruments, some beautiful ballad singing, and maybe even some fancy footwork. Also from the region, closer to Edwards, they have the 17-piece tour-de-force Fraser Family and Friends, and well known fiddler extraordinaire, Don Woodcock. Lee Knight, a north country native who now makes his home in North Carolina, has performed throughout the U.S. and internationally. As a traditional banjo and mouth bow player, he has collaborated with renowned Chinese flute player Wu Man, performing with the Wu Man Trio in Carnegie Hall.
Ruch has many stories to tell and songs to sing from this collection of music.
