Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad short of fundraising goal

OGDENSBURG — The Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad remains far from its goal of raising $250,000 by year’s end to help pay for its newly opened headquarters at 1223 Pickering St.

But no one at the squad is complaining that the campaign for the $1.9 million project has thus far raised only $70,000.

“I’m certainly not disappointed,” said Kenneth J. Gardner, the squad’s director of operations. “We understand the times.”

“Economic times are hard now,” said R. Storm Cilley, the squad’s treasurer.

The squad also is not worried about failing to meet overly ambitious deadlines. It has 30 years to pay off the low-interest $1.6 million U.S. Department of Agriculture loan and, Mr. Gardner promised, there will be more fundraisers.

Last week’s dedication of the Debbie Abel Memorial Garden on the headquarters’s grounds is a symbol of the group’s efforts, with $9,240 generated by the sale of 154 inscribed bricks at $60 apiece.

There is room for more bricks.

“We can easily double that,” said Rosemarie Lovely, the squad’s fundraiser chairwoman.

“The memorial garden is a forever project,” Mr. Gardner said.
