SYRACUSE — The Syracuse University football team named Jay Bromley, Macky MacPherson, Jerome Smith and Marquis Spruill as its four captains for the 2013 season. The captains were selected by a team vote.

Bromley, a senior defensive tackle, has played 37 games for the Orange and a career total of 79 tackles.

MacPherson, a senior center, is nominated for the Rimmington Award presented to the nation’s best center. MacPherson has started the past two seasons and is the grandson of former Syracuse head coach Dick MacPherson.

Smith, a junior running back, is the Atlantic Coast Conference’s leading returning rusher, amassing 1,171 yards in 2012. He is the 11th rusher in school history to run for a 1,000 yards in a season.

Spruill, a senior linebacker, is a three-year starter and has 177 tackles in 38 career games for the Orange.

Syracuse opens the season against Penn State at 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 31 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
