Ogdensburg International Airport will take delivery next week of a new fire truck, a custom-built, $282,000 model that will replace the current 23-year-old vehicle.

Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority Director of Operations Steven J. Lawrence said that the Airwolf C3 truck will be delivered here by its manufacturer, Rosenbauer America of Minnesota, on Aug. 21.

Mr. Lawrence said Thursday that Federal Aviation Administration regulations call for new airport firefighting vehicles as specifications change.

“This truck is 23 years old,” he said. “You need to replace it.”

Breakdown is inevitable, Mr. Lawrence said.

“There are things that you can’t get parts for,” he said.

The new truck will feature standard equipment like a 500-gallon water tank, a 60-galllon foam tank and storage for 500 pounds of dry chemicals. A new feature, Mr. Lawrence said, is an infrared camera to detect hot spots on burning plane.

The airport has one employee trained to operate the truck, according to Frederick S. Morrill, the authority’s deputy executive director. The Ogdensburg Fire Department provides assistance if needed.

FAA regulations require that airports with regularly scheduled flights have their own fire protection and rescue equipment. While the Ogdensburg Fire Department may assist in emergencies, the airport cannot rely on the department’s equipment and must provide its own.

The Heuvelton Fire Department has expressed an interest in acquiring the 23-years-old truck.
