MONTAGUE — A fire captain from Schenectady was identified as the victim of a fatal all-terrain vehicle crash Monday afternoon in the town of Montague.

John Nicol Jr., 47, and a friend were riding ATVs on Horace Forward Truck Trail when Mr. Nicol lost control on a gravel bed and ran into a tree, according to Lewis County Sheriff Michael P. Carpinelli.

He was ejected from his ATV and died of his injuries shortly afterward.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by Lewis County District Attorney Leanne K. Moser, also the county coroner.

Mr. Nicol was a 23-year veteran of the Schenectady Fire Department and had been a captain since November 2006, according to an Associated Press report from the Daily Gazette newspaper in Schenectady.
