WADDINGTON Grant D. Hayes, 5, might be too young to fulfill his dream of becoming a firefighter just yet, but that hasnt stopped him from helping out his communitys fire department and rescue squad.
Grant recently raised $50 through a lemonade stand outside his home during garage sale days. He chose to donateevery penny to the Waddington Volunteer Rescue Squad.
I wanted to do it because if anyone got hurt, they would have money to help them, the kindergartner said.
Grants parents, Katherine and Ryan P. Hayes, said they were proud their son was learning to help others all on his own.
We were unsure when he got the money if he would part with it, Mrs. Hayes said. Its easy to change your mind at 5 years old. But he had no qualms about it – not once. Were pretty excited about that.
June L. Dumas, president of the rescue squad, said the money would go to the squads general fund to support supplies and equipment.
I think its wonderful that the youth think of our volunteer organizations, and Grant graciously donated his money to our squad, Mrs. Dumas said.
