It has been a busy summer at Ogdensburg Public Library, thanks mostly to the presence of a newly hired children and youth librarian.

In June, according to library Director Wayne L. Miller, a total of 6,040 books were taken out, up from the 2012 monthly total of 5,661 books.

The hike in circulation covered both age categories. Adults were up to 5,303 books, a rise from the June 2012 total of 5,097 books.

In the juvenile category, readership was also up from 564 books in June 2012 to 736 books.

The programs - Music and Movement dancing, reading and others - were held nine times in June and drew 75 people. That kind of attendance, Mr. Miller believes, spills over into browsing the book aisles.

“If we get people here for the programs, then they are going to borrow more books,” he said.

The July statistics aren’t in yet. But with school recess, adult vacation season and more time for additional programs, Mr. Miller is sure that the numbers will be higher.

“I do know that our program numbers are up,” he said.

A July 16 exhibit of animals that dig from Thompson Park Zoo in Watertown drew 134 people.

Children and Youth Librarian Dorian Lenney-Wallace was hired in May. The position had vacant and covered by staff and volunteers since the January 2012 resignation of Bonnie Wright.
