Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, launched the bipartisan Congressional Aluminum Caucus on Thursday with two Republicans and another Democrat. The group plans to call attention in the coming months to issues that affect the health of the U.S. aluminum industry.

In July, Mr. Owens participated in a ground-breaking ceremony at Alcoa’s East Plant in Massena. The company started a $600 million expansion and modernization project that will protect about 1,000 local jobs and indirectly support local construction jobs. Mr. Owens said in a release that the expansion is just one example of the importance of the aluminum industry in the north country.

The caucus “will allow me to direct Congress’s attention to the needs of my constituents in Massena and across New York who rely on the aluminum industry to make a living,” Mr. Owens said in the release. “This industry is one of the region’s largest employers.”

Other leaders of the caucus are Larry Bucshon, R-Ind., Suzan DelBene, D-Wash., and William Johnson, R-Ohio.
