LISBON - The first-ever outdoor volleyball tournament in support of Lights on the River is being held Aug. 10 at the Lisbon Beach.

With recently renovated volleyball courts, the beach is “a great place for a tournament,” Campground Director Michael J. O’Neil said.

Scott A. Wilhelm, president of Lights on the River, said the tournament will be open to people of varying skill levels.

“We’re looking to attract teams from around the area,” he said. “It’s going to be a mix of competitive and recreational teams so anybody can come out and play.”

The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. with four on four matches for the competitive teams and six on six matches for the recreational league.

Mr. Wilhelm said the tournament is a great way to “create more awareness about the event.”

Lights on the River is a holiday light show that features dozens of Christmas light displays at the Lisbon Beach and Campground in order to raise money for local food pantries.

“We’ve created a good network of people,” Mr. Wilhelm said. “With the beach [tournament] we’re looking to expand on that.”

Lights on the River also holds an indoor volleyball tournament in the spring at Lisbon Central School.

Mr. Wilhelm said the indoor tournament typically draws 20 teams and he expects to see a similar turnout – or better – at the beach.

Mr. O’Neil said he is going to set up picnic tables by the volleyball courts for the event and that players are welcome to cool off at the beach after the games.

The tournament costs $100 per team to enter.
