CANTON - After finishing tied atop the regular season standings, the FC Freeze U12 Girls soccer team ended the 2013 NNYYSL campaign by claiming top post-season honors this past Saturday.
Competing in Philadelphia at Indian River Central fields, the Freeze posted wins in both of their 30-minute playoff games, starting with a 3-0 decision over Northern Oswego Soccer Club 2-0 before outlasting Indian River United 2-1 in the title game.
In the win over NOSC, Cantons Delaney Hayes got the Freeze off to a fast start when she moved up from playing fullback to fire a direct kick into the top of the net. With one minute remaining in the first half, Parishville players hooked up for a score as fullback Brooke Hayes sent a perfect lead pass to striker Anourine Pullano, who blasted the ball into the net to make it 2-0 at the half.
Delaney Hayes started the second half just like the first by once again blistering a direct kick into the net. Olivia Mace (Ohio), Rylee Dennis (Maitland), Katie Cowen (Potsdam) and Sophia Janoyan (Potsdam) kept pressure on NOSC keeper, who was credited with four saves, but the Freeze would go on to settle for the 3-0 win.
Ogdensburgs Natalie McCormick made one save backstopping the shutout.
In the final, the Freeze took on tournament host Indian River United Soccer Club Team in what proved to be a dramatic crowd-pleaser. The Freeze kept the opposing goalie on her toes. Delaney Hayes fired a direct kick and IRUSC keeper made a good save. Briefly after Hayes shot, Janoyan took a shot on goal and was denied. McCormick then made two saves before Pullano took a shot that was saved by their keeper.
In the second half, IRUSC mistakenly left Delaney Hayes unmarked. She settled the ball and crushed it high in the net for FCs first goal. Less than a minute later, IRUSC had a breakaway and tied the game up. FC maintained their composure. Midfielder Dennis headed to the bench with a foot injury. Mace had a strong shot on goal. Dennis came back into the game and with five minutes left in the game and demonstrated her ball skills as she dribbled through traffic and booted the ball into the back of the net. IRUSC had one last shot on goal but Brooke Hayes made a nice save to seal the 2-1win.
