POTSDAM — The Community Performance Series production of “Little Shop of Horrors” opens next Tuesday and runs through Aug. 10 in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music.

This production follows a successful six-performance run of “Hairspray” which closed on Saturday.

“Little Shop of Horrors” is a comedy-horror rock musical, by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman, about a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human flesh and blood. Mr. Menken’s music is in the style of early 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown, and includes several well-known tunes, including the title song, “Skid Row (Downtown),” “Somewhere That’s Green” and “Suddenly, Seymour.”

In addition to the original long-running 1982 off-Broadway production and the 2003 Broadway production, “Little Shop of Horrors” has been performed all over the world, and in 1986 was made into a film of the same name, directed by Frank Oz.

“Little Shop” is directed by Donna Drake. Miss Drake, New York City, was in the original Broadway productions of “A Chorus Line,” “Sophisticated Ladies,” “The Wind in the Willows” and other shows. A television actress as well, she received an Emmy nomination for the 1978-82 ABC program “Dear Alex and Annie.” She is now a director and choreographer.

“Little Shop” consists of local actors David Bish of Massena as Mushnik, Cecilia Snow of Potsdam as an urchin and Zack Kelley of Governeur as the puppeteer. These actors will be joined onstage by additional cast members from New York City and California.

Tickets and information are available by calling the CPS box office at 267-2277 or online at www.CPSPotsdam.org.

Tickets can also be purchased at Northern Music and Video, 29 Market St.
